In 2001, John C. Shields produced The American Aeneas: Classical Origins of the American Self, provocatively demonstrating America’s debt to classical civilization and deeply advancing the discussion Meyer Reinhold had revived in Classica Americana (1984).  Notably, Shields’s work produced a multiethnic analysis of the classical tradition in American literature and culture, including African Americans’ participation in this tradition via Phillis Wheatley.
